The latest iPad mini is finally here. With a new design, faster processor, and better cameras, the iPad mini 6 has received what Apple claims is the biggest upgrade the iPad mini series has ever had.
Screen
Compared to the iPad mini 5, the overall size remains almost the same, while the iPad mini 6 has a larger 8.3-inch display ( Liquid Retina ) with a resolution of 2266 x 1488 pixels (the older iPad mini has a 7.9-inch display with 2048 x 1536 pixels). The new edge-to-edge display makes it look like a mini version of the iPad Air. Since there is no room for a home button, Touch ID has been integrated into the power button.
Cameras
The iPad mini 6’s cameras have been upgraded, now there’s a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle front camera that supports the iPad Pro 2021’s Center Stage feature, where the camera tracks you to keep you in the frame when you are on a video call, and a 12-megapixel rear camera that can record video in 4K instead of 1080p HD. Although it’s still not socially acceptable to take pictures with your iPad instead of your smartphone, we should welcome the camera improvements that allow us to take better videos and pictures.
Performance
The iPad mini 6 is equipped with Apple’s latest A15 Bionic chip, which Apple also uses in the iPhone 13 series. But compared to 3.2 GHz in the iPhone 13 series, the chip in the iPad mini is clocked down to 2.9 GHz. According to benchmarks from Geekbench founder John Poole, the downclocked chip in iPad mini 6 still offers significantly better performance than the iPad mini 5 with A12 chip, up to 40% and 70% faster in single-core and multi-core performance, respectively. 5G is supported on models starting at $619, If you have Wi-Fi 6 router, you would get faster internet connection on iPad mini 6.
More
iPad mini 6 supports Apple Pencil 2nd generation, but there is no Apple Smart Keyboard for it. It also uses USB-C, which means you get to transfer data much faster and you can connect it directly to more devices like cameras and monitors.
Price
The starting price of the iPad mini 6 is $499, which is $100 more expensive than its predecessor, the iPad mini 5. It is available in four colors: purple, pink, starlight and space gray. To go with the new color options, Apple has also released a series of Smart Covers. To the surprise of many fans, Apple has dropped the 128GB storage option for the iPad mini 6, offering only 64GB and 256GB. You can pre-order it now on Apple’s official website and hopefully start using it before the end of the month.
