In 2020, Apple started the trend of not including a charger in the box and forced buyers to purchase new ones if they didn’t have a charger lying around. Several other smartphone makers, including Samsung and Xiaomi, followed Apple’s lead and joined this controversial move.

I’m sure many of you already have a lot of plugs laying around, but the old 5W or 10W ones seem outdated these days when almost all smartphones and devices support fast charge.

We all know that original adapters can be very expensive; Apple’s new 20W USB-C power adapter sells for $19, and Samsung’s 25W USB-C fast charger is priced at $34.99. When it comes to inexpensive third-party chargers, we need to try to pick one that is both reliable and trustworthy. I have been using and testing the Mkeke 20W fast charge for a while, and I think it’s a very good alternative – and even more so considering the very reasonable price. Like pretty much every other adapter, Mkeke doesn’t come with a cord, you will need to purchase that separately. It is slightly smaller than the Apple USB-C charger, and the weight of 47.4g is actually lighter than Apple’s 58.2g.

It’s compatible with all the flagships like iPhone 12 and Galaxy S21, as well as my favorite Nintendo Switch. Of course, any device charged by USB-C should work, although smaller phone brands may not always support fast charging. It triggered my S20’s advanced fast charging and powered it up to 50% in just 30 minutes, which is 3 times faster than the original 5W as they advertised. When you recharge your phone, the battery temperature usually peaks at around the 30-minute mark. Mkeke tells us they have put in an intelligent chip to protect devices from both overheating and overcharging. The fact Mkeke reached 36.7 °C (98 °F) with ambient temperature around 24 °C (80.6 °F) shouldn’t affect anything. It might not be as impressive as Apple does in temperature control, but I am not complaining given the price.
