At the 2020 OPPO Future Technology Conference, OPPO displayed the OPPO X 2021 scroll screen concept phone, which is a new innovative form of mobile phone. Recently, in the fourth China International Industrial Design Expo, OPPO and the Japanese design team Nendo, led by the famous Japanese designer Dato Sato, brought the design concept of “Slide-phone” featuring three hinges folding.
In recent years, many concept smartphones with OLED panels use folding technology which makes the size of a standard smartphone unfolds to two or three times bigger. Such as Samsung Galaxy Fold, Royole FlexPai series, Huawei’s Mate Xs, and Motorola Razr.
Folding phones combine the benefits of portability, compactness, as well as the functionality of enlarged screens.
The phone in its folded state is roughly 2.1″ by 3.3″, which is similar to the size of a credit card, featuring three hinges folding over in the same direction. Sliding one fold up exposes 40 mm of the screen with various functions, such as the time, call history, notifications, and the music player. Next, sliding the second fold reveals 80 mm of the screen as well as the front-facing camera. Finally, the phone can unfold into a 7-inch screen by the user with one thumb.
The controls on the side shapes like half ellipses, functioning as two to four buttons, becoming small, semicircular buttons or combining into one large button as the folds slide up and down. It also contains a stylus inserted that also makes the phone works as a writing pad.
The design opens up new possibilities for smartphones, for their use can choose to fully fold, opened or partially unfolded the phone according to different needs.
