If you want a car to stand out from the crowd, BMW’s one-off X6 Vantablack will definitively turn some heads on the street. BMW painted the car using “the darkest material on Earth, click to read more about the paint.” At night, the car could completely merge with the darkness.
The paint can absorb all light, without reflecting any back. BMW adjusted the paint to give the car some definition. The X6 Vantablack could reflect 1% of the light in contact with the car, so it is visible on the road.
It is unclear when consumers would be able to buy a BMW in Vantablack, but it will be for sure expensive. Ben Jensen, the CTO of Surrey Nanosystem, said the paint would be incredibly pricey. The pigment used in the paint is originally designed for outer space. It could endure extreme cold, and block out strong lighting from the sun.
Data shows black cars already have a higher rate of accident, Vantablack definitely wouldn’t help. Moreover, you will definitely lose your car in the car park at night.
BMW will debut the car in September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
