This innovative macro lens will take your photography to the next level
A macro lens is a type of camera lens that allows the photographer to capture extremely close up images of their subject. Shots taken with a macro lens typically reveal interesting textures and patterns that are not easily noticed without close inspection.
Thanks to camera enthusiasts at Venus Optics, a new take on the macro lens is now available on the consumer market.
The Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Macro Lens is unique from other macro lenses on the market. This is because traditional macros have a long focal length (60mm to 120mm) that causes the subject to fill the frame and become isolated from the background. With the Laowa’s 24mm focal length, the user is able to get extremely close to the subject while capturing detail and texture in the subject and the background.
Furthermore, with traditional macro lenses, you need to get extremely close to the subject in order to correctly focus the lens. In many situations, this is simply not possible as it would disturb the subject or the camera itself could not fit into the desired area.
Because the Laowa Macro Lens has a long barrel (15.7 inches), the photographer can focus on the subject of the shot while keeping themselves and their camera far away from it.
This feature allows the camera operator to shoot without interrupting their subject which is especially useful in wildlife photography scenarios.
In addition, the long, tubular nature of the lens allows you to shoot “slide in” shots through very small areas such as between the pages of an open book like the GIF below demonstrates.
The lens, despite its long length, is extremely light weighing in at only 1.04 pounds.
As with any piece of photography or videography equipment, this lens will not suddenly make you a great photographer or videographer. That being said, it will allow you to explore new, interesting perspectives that could inspire and help to expand the breadth your creative work.
The lens is available on Kickstarter for $1499.
